John Harbison
Composer

Professor John Harbison is among America's most distinguished artistic figures. He has received numerous awards and distinctions including two of the most prestigious honors awarded in America, the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (1989), and the Pulitzer Prize (1987) for his cantata "The Flight into Egypt". Professor Harbison has composed music for most of America's premiere musical institutions, including the Chicago Symphony, the Los Angeles Philharmonic and most recently the Boston Symphony, which commissioned his last major liturgical work "Requiem" for the orchestra's centennial. The BSO and Tanglewood Festival Chorus performed his "Requiem" under Bernard Haitink both at Symphony Hall (Boston) and in their elite Carnegie Hall (New York) series. The Metropolitan Opera commissioned "The Great Gatsby" from him in 1999. This opera was so successful that the Met, with its Artistic Director James Levine on the podium and opera-stars Jerry Hadley and Dawn Upshaw in the cast, revived the production in 2002.

John Harbison has an long-association with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, which commissioned "Abraham" specially for this evenings concert. He served as the orchestra's Composer-In-Residence in the mid-1980's. Professor Harbison's commitment to liturgical and spiritual music spans his entire career. He has maintained a relationship with Emanuel Church in Boston where he performs frequently, and where his works form a central part of the musical life of that important New England religious institution. John Harbison enjoys a stellar academic reputation. He holds degrees from Harvard (BA) and Princeton (MFA) and is currently occupying an "Institute Professorship" at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the highest academic distinction MIT offers to resident faculty.
